What is nickname registration, and why should I use it?

What is “nickname registration”?

Nickname registration is a service provided by the chat server that allows you to register your nickname with an email address and password so that no one else can use it. It’s a very simple process.

To register your nickname, simply type the following, and then press Enter.

/msg nickserv register <password> <email>

Be sure to replace “<password>” and “<email>” with a secure password that you will remember, and a real, working email address. Oh, and don’t use the “<” and “>” characters either. Don’t worry, we will not sell, rent, or use your email address for any reason except in the case that you forget your password. It is recommended that you type this in the Server tab (it will say “Occultus” if you’re using our webchat. See the example image below.

After you have registered your nickname successfully, you should see a message that says

[NickServ] Nickname <yournick> registered under your account: <yournick>
That’s all there is to it! Your nickname is now registered.

OK, I registered my nickname. Now what?

Now, when you connect, you will see a message saying that your nickname is registered. To authenticate yourself, simply type

/msg nickserv identify

Make sure you use the password that you set in the REGISTER command. For example, our “ExampleUser” above would authenticate by using

/msg nickserv identify SuperSecretPassword

HELP! I forgot my password!

It’s OK. You did use a real email address when you registered, right? To recover your password, simply type

/msg nickservsendpass

Make sure to replace <nickname> with YOUR nickname. For example,

/msg nickserv sendpass ExampleUser

Your password will be sent to the email address you used when you registered your nickname.

But I have an “away” nickname, too…

Have more than one nickname? No problem. You don’t have to register each one. Simply change to your other nickname (/nick <newnick>) and type

/msg nickserv group <mainnick> <password>

If our user, ExampleUser, wanted to also have “ExampleAway” registered, they would type

/nick ExampleAway
/msg nickserv group ExampleUser SuperSecretPassword

There are many more commands that you can use with nickserv. For a full listing, type

/msg nickserv help
